IPED Launches 40th Anniversary Celebrations

The Institute of Private Enterprise Development Limited (IPED) has officially launched its year-long celebration of its 40th Anniversary — commemorating four decades of empowering Guyanese entrepreneurs, transforming lives, and contributing to national development under the theme “A Legacy of Empowerment: 40 Years of Promoting Entrepreneurship, Transforming Lives, and Supporting National Development.” 

Founded on the vision of the late Dr. Yesu Persaud, an iconic pioneer and nation-builder, IPED was born out of a deep conviction that Guyanese could chart their own economic destiny through entrepreneurship. During a period when the country’s economy was shaped by Cooperative Socialism and private enterprise was discouraged, Dr. Persaud recognized the urgent need for an institution that would rekindle the entrepreneurial spirit and restore confidence in local business innovation. His vision gave rise to an enduring national institution — one that continues to inspire enterprise and self-reliance among thousands of Guyanese. 

Initially established in 1985 as the Institute of Small Enterprise Development (ISED) and formally incorporated in 1986, IPED gained early recognition from the Government of Guyana under the late President Hugh Desmond Hoyte, who declared it an Institution of National Worth for its crucial role in rebuilding the social and economic fabric of the nation. 

IPED’s remarkable journey was supported by a network of local and international partners, including the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), the Foundation for International Training (FIT) of Canada, and contributions from forward-thinking corporate leaders such as Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), Seagrams (UK), Booker Sugar Company, Texaco (WI) Ltd, West Indian Trading (Canada), W. Breitenstein of Holland, and the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC). Later, additional support from institutions such as PL480 (USAID), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the European Investment Bank (EIB) further solidified IPED’s foundation and sustainability. 

From its humble beginnings in 1986, with a single employee, Mr. Jeff Adiken managing all functions, IPED has grown into a robust, nationwide institution employing over 100 professionals across 14 branches nationwide. Today, it stands among the most geographically inclusive and impactful development organizations in Guyana. 

Over the past 39 years, IPED has disbursed more than 150,000 loans, helping thousands of Guyanese — especially women, youth, and members of underserved communities — to build sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond financing, IPED provides business mentorship and development services that continue to fuel innovation, job creation, and enterprise growth in every region of Guyana. 

Celebrating 40 Years of Impact 

As IPED commemorates this historic milestone, it has unveiled a series of activities designed to honour its legacy, celebrate entrepreneurship, and engage communities across Guyana: 

• Celebration of the Legacy of the Late Dr. Yesu Persaud – held on October 18th, 2025, at the World Trade Center, Guyana, in tribute to IPED’s Founder and the values he championed. ● National Business Pitch Competition – open to aspiring and existing entrepreneurs across Guyana. Details appear monthly in Stabroek News and Guyana Chronicle. Deadline: December 15th, 2025. 
• Art Competition: “The Spirit of Enterprise” – inviting artists to depict the power of entrepreneurship and empowerment. Entries will be featured monthly in national newspapers. Deadline: January 15th, 2026. 
• Mini Exposition – showcasing IPED’s clients, partners, and innovators. Scheduled: April 2026. ● Two-Day Micro Conference – uniting local and international experts to discuss the future of entrepreneurship and small business development in Guyana. Scheduled: April 2026. 

A Vision for the Future 

As IPED steps into its fifth decade, it reaffirms its enduring mission — to help people help themselves through enterprise development. This 40th Anniversary is more than a celebration of the past; it is a recommitment to shaping the future — nurturing new generations of Guyanese entrepreneurs, advancing innovation, and deepening IPED’s contribution to national transformation. 

Under the stewardship of Mr. Komal Samaroo, Chairman of IPED’s Board of Directors, and supported by a distinguished Board whose members willingly volunteer their time and expertise in service to IPED, together with the leadership of the Management Team and dedication of the Staff, the organization continues to uphold the values of integrity, service, and empowerment that define its legacy.
