WIN Slams Govt Over Poor Health Facilities in Wayal Ayeng, Region 7

The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party has criticised the government for what it describes as neglect of rural healthcare, highlighting the deplorable conditions at the Wayal Ayeng Health Post in Region Seven.

In a post on its official social media page, the party contrasted what it called the Head of State’s “luxurious international travel” with the hardships faced by citizens in remote communities.

“While the Head of State travels around the world on first-class tickets funded by the state, stays in five-star hotels, has posh dinners and takes photo ops with Princes, this country continues to SUFFER,” WIN stated.

According to the party, Wayal Ayeng—a satellite village of Phillipai with about 200 residents—has a health post that has been in a dilapidated condition for a decade. WIN blamed both major political parties for the situation.

“The building has been in this deplorable condition for 10 years, which means both the PPP and the APNU administration failed the people,” the post read.

The WIN party said the facility currently operates with only one midwife and one community health worker, and it lacks an emergency boat to transport patients to Phillipai, which has the nearest airstrip. The party also shared images showing a worn hospital bed reportedly used for all medical treatments, including childbirth.

“There is no proper water supply. There is no place to store the medication. Wayal Ayeng needs a new health post and a new boat with an outboard engine to get to Phillipai… to seek further medical attention,” WIN said.

Questioning the government’s commitment to equitable healthcare, the post added:

“Does this government care about the healthcare services provided to the citizens of this country while they themselves opt to travel abroad for medical services? These pictures are telling. Basic health services are lacking in Guyana. Would the President or any sitting cabinet member go to Wayal Ayeng Health Post to seek medical attention?”

WIN concluded by calling on the Ministry of Health to prioritise the construction of a new health post in Wayal Ayeng and to provide better resources for healthcare delivery in interior regions.

“We are calling on the Ministry of Health to build a new health post in Wayal Ayeng,” the party said.
