By Mark DaCosta- A recent motorcycle accident along the Rupert Craig Highway has left a local community in mourning as a 45-year-old man lost his life after a collision involving two vehicles. This incident underscores a growing concern over the alarming frequency of motorcycle-related accidents in our nation, particularly as reckless behaviours among riders appear to be increasing.
Jomo Peters, a resident of Haslington New Scheme, was riding his motorcycle early on Thursday morning when the tragic series of events unfolded. According to police reports, Peters was speeding and not wearing a helmet when he attempted to overtake a line of traffic near Pump Road, Liliendaal. His motorcycle made contact with a motorcar driven by a 21-year-old woman, whose vehicle was travelling in the opposite direction. The collision sent Peters into a perilous spin, ultimately leading to a second impact with another car driven by a 28-year-old woman.
Witnesses at the scene described the harrowing aftermath as Peters was ejected onto the median, suffering severe injuries. Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead on-site. Following the accident, law enforcement conducted breathalyser tests on the drivers involved, which revealed no traces of alcohol in their systems. However, they have been taken into custody to aid in the ongoing investigation.
The situation brings to light a troubling trend on our roads, particularly regarding motorcycles. Over recent years, there has been a notable rise in the number of serious accidents involving motorcyclists. Many of these riders, predominantly young males, engage in risky behaviours that contribute to the dangers associated with motorcycling. Not infrequently, these individuals can be seen performing stunts, such as popping wheelies amidst heavy traffic, often disregarding fundamental traffic regulations.
