We Must Rise. We must never lose faith. We must never give up.
Our ancestors faced centuries of oppression, yet they never surrendered their hope. For over four hundred years, they dreamed of freedom, not for themselves alone, but for their children and their children’s children children. They built villages along the coast and by the rivers. They toiled, saved, and sacrificed so that we could stand taller, learn freely, and claim dignity in our own land.
Today, that legacy calls to us again. We must not let despair silence our courage. We must not allow injustice to dim our light. When a woman like Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, who has served with integrity and distinction, is treated unjustly, we must stand, not just for her, but for what she represents, Black excellence, discipline, grace, and leadership.
Our people have always risen, no matter how heavy the hand against us. From plantation fields to boardrooms, from rural classrooms to global universities, we have proven that brilliance, creativity, and compassion live within us. We are builders, thinkers, and dreamers. We are descendants of resilience itself.
Now is not the time to sink into sadness, freeze in confusion, or descend into conflict. It is time to organize. Time to teach our children who they are. Time to invest in our communities. Time to build our own businesses. Time to insist on fairness, integrity, and equality.
We must love each other enough to speak truth with courage, to uplift our brothers and sisters when they fall, and to build institutions that will outlive us. We must love our children enough to demand better schools that inspire, leaders that serve, and systems that treat all Guyanese with dignity.
Let us remember, our history is not one of defeat but of endurance. Our story is not ending, it is unfolding. We will continue to rise, because rising is what we have always done but we must never give up. Never back down. Never cower in fear. Never be co-opted by the enemy. Never join hands with a racist.
