"His behavior yesterday was contemptible, unbecoming, lawless, and disrespectful”

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — October 24, 2025:
The Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) has issued a strong statement condemning Justice Navendra Singh, describing him as “lacking the judicial temperament” required to serve as Chief Justice of Guyana.

In a release dated Friday, CGID Director of Communications Richard Millington, Esq. said the organization is calling on Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton to withhold his consent for Justice Singh’s proposed appointment by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

“His behavior yesterday was contemptible, unbecoming, lawless, and disrespectful,” Millington stated. “He is an embarrassment to the nation as a judge.”

The organization accused Justice Singh of conduct that has been “indecorous and imbued with arrogance and PPP partisan politics,” alleging that his judicial decisions and courtroom demeanor have reflected “the PPP’s ideology of ethnic supremacy.”

CGID maintained that Justice Singh “does not have the judicial temperament to be on the bench, let alone serve as Chief Justice.”

The group also referenced what it described as “a previous incident endangering the welfare of students at Queen’s College,” suggesting a pattern of questionable judgment.

The statement follows mounting political tension over pending judicial appointments, with President Ali signaling his intention to confirm senior acting judicial officers.
Under Guyana’s Constitution, the appointment of a Chief Justice requires the agreement of both the President and the Leader of the Opposition.

CGID’s public appeal adds to the growing debate over judicial independence and political influence in the appointment process.

Justice Singh, who has served for several years on the High Court bench, has not publicly responded to the allegations.
