Canadian-based Guyanese, niece robbed of over 900k

On Friday, January 15, 2021, a Guyanese-Canadian and her niece were allegedly robbed of over GYD $900,000 in items and cash at Port Mourant Village by bandits wielding a gun and a knife.

The overseas-based Guyanese of Canadian citizenship is 53-year-old Parbattie Etwaroo of Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant Village, Corentyne, Berbice. At the time, she was with her 33-year-old niece, a vendor of the same address.

According to reports, on Friday around 08:00hrs, at the address mentioned, the Etwaroo was in the living room folding clothes when she was confronted by a bandit armed with a handgun who pointed same into her direction and told her not to move. Subsequently, the bandit dealt her a lash to her head.

He then took her to the bedroom and demanded that she hand over all her money and personal belongings. Fearful for her life and complied.

The bandit with the knife stood on the interior step and held a knife to the neck of the victim’s niece.

They were robbed of GYD $50,000; CAD $500; one gold bangle valued GYD $90,000; a gold necklace with diamond pendant valued CAD$3,500; a gold necklace valued GYD $60,000; and a Samsung Galaxy A71, valued CAD $700.

The bandits then made good their escape on foot towards the Southern direction. Investigations are in progress.
