The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has announced that the ongoing dry season has significantly disrupted water supply across several hinterland communities, with Region One being among the hardest hit.
According to GWI, the extended drought has led to the depletion of a number of surface water sources, forcing the utility to adjust its pumping schedules in order to manage the limited supply.
“As part of these measures, residents in Santa Rosa have experienced adjustments to their water delivery schedule,” the company stated. “GWI assures residents that these changes are temporary and are being carefully managed to sustain service while longer-term solutions are being implemented.”
To strengthen resilience against seasonal fluctuations, the company said it is pursuing an “aggressive groundwater development programme.”
Meanwhile, GWI has flagged “decreasing water levels in other critical sources, including Mabaruma Springs,” and is urging residents in all affected areas to practice strict water conservation.
“Sharing this information widely within communities will also assist in ensuring that residents remain prepared and supportive of these measures,” the statement added.
GWI reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and reliable water to hinterland residents and promised to keep the public updated as work progresses.”
