Dear Editor,
The recently circulated video implicating Minister Susan Rodrigues in alleged corrupt practices has ignited a wave of public anger, and rightly so. For too long, thousands of Guyanese have been languishing on waiting lists for a piece of land, while the perception grows that some in positions of power are using their authority to enrich themselves and their inner circles.
Let it be clear, no amount of lawsuits or threats of defamation will silence the call for truth. The only way forward is a full, independent, and transparent investigation. This is about the people’s right to know and the need to restore trust in public office.
This is not the first time Minister Rodrigues’ name has been linked to questionable dealings at the Ministry of Housing and Water. A previous incident saw a staff member from her secretariat fingered in acts of corruption, yet nothing of substance was done; impunity reigned, and the issue faded from the headlines without justice being served.
Now, the name of Mr. Sherwin Greaves has also surfaced in connection with these matters, and yet again, no visible action has been taken. The silence from the authorities is deafening, and it only reinforces the public’s belief that there is one standard of justice for the powerful and another for the ordinary citizen.
And why should we expect anything different? This is the same administration under which Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo was caught on video by renowned journalist Isobel Yeung, engaged in secret deal discussions with Chinese businessman Su. At the time, President Irfaan Ali assured the nation that the allegations would be investigated. Three years later, nothing. Jagdeo himself promised to take legal action against Su, yet to date there has been no report of the matter ever being brought before the courts. This is the blueprint of impunity, and it is now being repeated.
Guyanese are tired of the excuses, the denials, and the backroom deals. We demand immediate, impartial action; not handpicked inquiries, not political whitewashing, but a genuine investigation led by credible and independent bodies. If our leaders cannot ensure accountability, then they forfeit the moral authority to lead.
The time for pretending is over. The PPP has shown time and again that it will protect its own at the expense of the people. Their pattern of corruption, cover-ups, and disregard for accountability proves they are unfit to govern. The PPP must go, our nation’s integrity, resources, and future depend on it.
Your truly,
Annette Ferguson
