The Alliance For Change (AFC) has elected Laura George, a prominent Indigenous rights advocate and experienced governance leader, as its Prime Ministerial candidate for the upcoming General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025.
The decision was made Thursday evening by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) after a rigorous and transparent four-hour deliberation process. The session was described as intense yet marked by camaraderie and fairness, with all members given the opportunity to question the candidates.
AFC Presidential Candidate Nigel Hughes praised the democratic nature of the selection process:
“The AFC has done itself proud tonight. It had a process, it was transparent, everyone was allowed to question the candidates, and this all augurs well for the future of our Party.”
Laura George is an Indigenous woman of the proud Ka’pon Nation, also known as the Akawaios of the forested highlands in Guyana. She currently serves as the Governance and Rights Coordinator at the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA)—a leading advocacy body dedicated to the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Guyana. In this role, she works with a dedicated team to ensure Indigenous rights are meaningfully represented in projects, legislation, policy, and programme development.
George is best known both locally and internationally for her fearless and principled representation of Indigenous Peoples’ rights. Having witnessed firsthand the destruction of waterways and forests due to mining activities, she continues the legacy of her elders and ancestors, who paved the path of advocacy and resistance in their homeland.
Her work through the APA provides her with a national and international platform to speak out on critical issues. Her vision, she has often stated, is “to see that the world urgently respects and protects human and environmental rights over profits.”
With more than two decades of experience in advocacy and community leadership, George brings a grounded and ethical voice to the AFC ticket. Her candidacy is seen as a strong symbol of inclusion and a powerful step toward amplifying the voices of hinterland and Indigenous communities in national leadership.
Over the past week, the AFC has unveiled several progressive development policies aimed at building a “new and prosperous republic.” The party’s campaign teams are already on the ground, travelling across the country to hold community-based meetings and engaging citizens directly.
George’s nomination has added new momentum to the campaign and is expected to resonate deeply among Guyanese voters who want leadership that blends integrity, lived experience, and a fierce commitment to human rights and environmental justice.
