Vincent Alexander (GECOM Commissioners)-The government appointed commissioners of GECOM, the Chairperson of GECOM and GECOM’S administration, to wit the Chief Elections Officer continue to trump GECOM’s preparedness for elections, notwithstanding the obvious and proposed need for GECOM to put certain measures in place to mitigate, if not alleviate, the possibilities of fraudulent voting. At the centre of such measures is the digital identification of voters at the place of poll.
There are those, local and overseas, who contend that GECOM’s systems are sufficiently robust to ensure that there is no fraudulent voting.
The Forward Guyana Movement’s (FGM) exposee of the existence of an ID card that was issued by GECOM although the holder is not a bone fide registrant, clearly exposes the corruption of GECOM’s system and the threat to free, fair and transparent elections. This is but one scenario of how fraudulent voting can actually occur.
Evidence of fraudulent voting has been previously provided, covered-up and ignored. Here is but another case of an unauthorized voter who cannot be detected by GECOM’s so call robust system if the illegitimate holder of such a card turns up to vote.
Electoral Democracy should not be held hostage by those who refuse to fix the system, and undermined on the altar of time.
