By Mark DaCosta- The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), spearheaded by former government minister Simona Broomes, is making strides in the political realm as it prepares for the upcoming electoral contest. On July 14, 2025, the party officially submitted its list of candidates.

Simona Broomes, a name synonymous with activism in our nation, has embarked on a new chapter in her political journey aimed at fostering social justice and empowerment among marginalised communities. With a storied history that intertwines her personal experiences in Guyana’s mining sector and her extensive advocacy work, Broomes has long been a staunch defender of the rights of women and the working class. Starting her career in the mining industry at just 15 years old, she has consistently fought against the systemic exploitation faced by vulnerable groups in our society.

Her work gained international acclaim when she founded the Guyana Women Miners’ Association (GWMO) in 2012, providing vital support to victims of human trafficking and advocating for survivors’ rights. Her bravery in this challenging arena earned her recognition as a Hero in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report by then U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in 2013. Broomes’ transition into formal politics took her through various ministerial roles, where her dedication to social welfare and labour rights became evident.

As she severed ties with the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Broomes reassured her supporters that her decision to establish the ALP was driven not by discord but by a commitment to pursue a principled political vision. The launch of the ALP on February 2, 2025, marked a pivotal moment for Broomes and her supporters who yearn for a political climate grounded in justice, dignity, and equality. Her vision for the ALP aims to rectify the social inequities that have persisted in our homeland for too long and to foster a society where every citizen can thrive.

The ALP’s manifesto articulates a clear mission centred around social dignity and the promotion of equal rights for all Guyanese. Broomes envisions a nation that is not only just and fair but also inclusive, providing every individual with the opportunities they deserve. The party underscores empowerment at its core, aiming to uplift communities and ensure that human rights are upheld without exception. It’s a platform that resonates deeply in a nation where many feel overlooked by traditional parties.

Having submitted its list of candidates, the ALP is gearing up for the general and regional elections scheduled for September 1, 2025. Broomes has expressed confidence that the party’s emblem, an eagle within a shield, will be a welcomed symbol on the ballots. Her optimism reflects the growing desire among the electorate for “good change” — a change she believes the ALP can deliver.

As Broomes rallies her supporters and solidifies her party’s presence on the national stage, the ALP emerges as part of a larger trend in our nation towards new political movements that seek to address the shortcomings of established parties. These movements aim to rejuvenate our democracy by offering fresh perspectives and solutions to longstanding issues, perfectly embodied in Broomes’ advocacy and personal journey.

Simona Broomes remains a formidable figure in our political landscape, driven by her unwavering commitment to justice and reform. Her efforts reflect a broader aspiration for a society that nurtures all its citizens, particularly those who have been historically marginalised. The upcoming elections will be pivotal, not only for Broomes and the ALP but for all of us who believe in a just, equitable future for our country.
