Simona Broomes, a name synonymous with activism in our nation, has embarked on a new chapter in her political journey aimed at fostering social justice and empowerment among marginalised communities. With a storied history that intertwines her personal experiences in Guyana’s mining sector and her extensive advocacy work, Broomes has long been a staunch defender of the rights of women and the working class. Starting her career in the mining industry at just 15 years old, she has consistently fought against the systemic exploitation faced by vulnerable groups in our society.
Her work gained international acclaim when she founded the Guyana Women Miners’ Association (GWMO) in 2012, providing vital support to victims of human trafficking and advocating for survivors’ rights. Her bravery in this challenging arena earned her recognition as a Hero in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report by then U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in 2013. Broomes’ transition into formal politics took her through various ministerial roles, where her dedication to social welfare and labour rights became evident.
As she severed ties with the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Broomes reassured her supporters that her decision to establish the ALP was driven not by discord but by a commitment to pursue a principled political vision.
