The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) has issued a public condemnation following a disturbing incident on July 1 at the Regional Division 4 ‘B’ Police Headquarters, where its leader, Dr. Simona Charles Broomes, was subjected to a verbal attack during a live broadcast. The ALP says the incident, which also targeted other female members of the movement, was met with “alarming indifference” by police officers present.

According to the party’s statement, Dr. Broomes attempted to report the verbal abuse and insults hurled at her by a man at the scene. Shockingly, officers on duty allegedly refused to take her report or offer any assistance — a response the ALP has described as “unacceptable” and emblematic of a deepening crisis in public trust and accountability within law enforcement.

The failure by the police to act reflects a disturbing reality in Guyana, where women are being targeted at a frightening rate, too often without consequence, the party declared.

Dr. Broomes, who has spent more than two decades championing the rights and dignity of women and girls, has become a prominent voice for justice and gender equality. ALP said her long-standing commitment to human rights makes the attack—and the police’s refusal to respond—all the more troubling.

“This movement will not be silenced,” the ALP stated defiantly. “We will press forward, and we will charge this fight until systems of power serve every citizen without bias, without fear, and without delay.”

The ALP concluded its statement by reaffirming its unwavering support for Dr. Broomes and all women across Guyana demanding to be heard, respected, and protected.

“A Good Change is Here,” the statement ends, echoing the party’s rallying call for justice and reform.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 2, 2025

ALP Condemns Verbal Attack on Movement Leader Dr. Simona Charles Broomes at Regional Division 4 ‘B’ Headquarters. The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) strongly denounces the verbal attack launched against Dr. Simona Charles Broomes and other female members on July 1, 2025, during a live broadcast at the Regional Division 4 ‘B’ Police Headquarters. This incident, carried out in the presence of law enforcement was met with alarming indifference. When Dr. Broomes attempted to report the man hurling insults and abuse, officers on duty blatantly refused to take her report or even offer help against the unprovoked attack.

This unacceptable failure by the police reflects a deepening crisis in public trust and accountability. It also takes place in a climate where women across Guyana are being targeted at a frightening rate, too often without consequence.

Dr. Broomes has dedicated over 20 years of her life to defending the rights and dignity of women and girls. She has stood up in the face of injustice time and again and now more than ever, ALP stands with her and with every woman who demands to be heard, respected and protected.

This movement will not be silenced. We will press forward, and we will charge this fight until systems of power serve every citizen without bias, without fear and without delay. Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) “A Good Change Is Here.”
