ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The history of West Indies cricketing dominance cannot be written without reference to Lance Gibbs, one of the greatest off-spinners to ever play the game.

An icon on and off the field, he paved the way for off-spinners in the West Indies and influenced the global growth and future dominance of this crafty skill in all forms of cricket.

Gibbs brought experience, class, and a deep tactical understanding to the West Indies squad that captured the inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup title in 1975, and thus, is being recognised and rightfully honoured during the 8th annual Cricket West Indies and the West Indies Players’ Association awards gala.

Though conditions in England and the emerging one-day format offered limited opportunities for spin, Gibbs’ inclusion in the squad was a testament to his immense value as a leader.

At 40 years old and nearing the end of his illustrious international career, Gibbs was a calming and respected figure in a team that featured a mix of youthful exuberance and seasoned campaigners. His wealth of Test experience—over 300 wickets at the time—gave the West Indies a strategic option in the spin department, and his mere presence in the squad added gravitas and guidance.

In an era when West Indies cricket was forging a new identity in limited-overs formats, Gibbs provided leadership, discipline, and a deep understanding of how to adapt to evolving match conditions. His role in nurturing younger bowlers and sharing tactical insights helped the team build the kind of unity and intelligence that would serve them well beyond the tournament.

His legacy in the 1975 squad is one of quiet influence and enduring respect, and his presence was a reminder that even in a new format, the values of discipline, strategy, and experience remain timeless.

The CWI/WIPA Awards Gala takes place on Sunday, June 22 at the Wyndham Grand Barbados, with broadcast coverage beginning at 5:30 PM. Limited fan tickets are available for purchase at www.windiescricket.com. (Windiescricket)
