BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The members of the West Indies’ victorious team that won the first-ever Cricket World Cup in 1975 are set to receive an award of US$10,000 from Cricket West Indies (CWI).

This was revealed on Sunday night by CWI president, Dr Kishore Shallow during the eighth annual CWI/WIPA Awards Gala at Wyndham Grand Barbados, which also marked the 50th Anniversary of the West Indies’ legendary victory at the inaugural ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in England.

Seven members of that team, including captain Sir Clive Lloyd, Deryck Murray, Sir Vivian Richards, Lance Gibbs, Sir Andy Roberts, Collis King and Alvin Kallicharran were present at the awards.

Dr Shallow described the players as “revolutionaries” and explained that the monetary award was a “token of appreciation” for their accomplishment.

“…In addition to the medallion that you will collect tonight on behalf of the CWI board, I am pleased to announce that we will be gifting each of these icons in attendance US$10 000.

“This is by no means your value to cricket, but just a token of our appreciation,” Dr Shallow said.

“They gave us pride, they gave us identity, and they gave us hope. We must stand with them during and after their playing days.”
