I want to congratulate Miss Juretha Fernandes on her nomination as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), as recognised by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Aubrey Compton Norton.
Should APNU be successful at this year’s elections under the the leadership of Mr Aubrey Norton, Miss Fernandes will emerge as Guyana’s first Indigenous female Prime Minister.
This will continuously break the barriers of the misogyny and stigma against Women of Indigenous Descent especially those who occupy such a high-level portfolio in government.
Additionally, it will also serve an impetus to young Indigenous Women in leadership knowing that they can excel and execute in any position given to them.
While others may question, the competence and capabilities of Miss Fernandes, it is important to note that this young lady from the outset has demonstrated fervour and passion especially during the Budget Debates and presentations.
Miss Fernandes is renowned for her exceptional financial analysis, due to her academic background in Economics and her ability to disaggregate current and capital expenditures.
The former Alliance for Change (AFC) member, categorically cited her party’s failure to reach a consensus for a coalition with APNU, and has taken a decisive stand to join the A Partnership For National Unity as a candidate with the support of Messrs Sherod Duncan and Deonarine “Ricky” Ramsaroop.
As a young man, I am elated about the opportunity afforded to Miss Fernandes and eagerly await to see her promising energy and abilities as a young Indigenous woman.
To this end, I urge our young people to showcase your unrelenting support to Miss Fernandes, since we are the future leaders of tomorrow, and it is important to recognise that, like any political figure, Miss Fernandes is not infallible and may indeed make mistakes, but we must be there to hold her hand and push her towards greatness and excellence.
