The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is ramping up preparations for the 2025 General and Regional Elections—and it’s giving every eligible citizen more time to get on the voters’ list.
In a critical move, GECOM has extended the operating hours of its registration offices nationwide to accommodate what it expects will be a surge of applicants during its Claims and Objections Exercise, which begins Sunday, June 16. The Claims portion of the process will run until Tuesday, June 18.
To ensure no one is left behind, GECOM offices will remain open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on June 16, 17, and 18—a two-hour extension from the usual 6:00 PM closing time.
This window is not just a convenience; it’s a vital opportunity. Every Guyanese who will be 18 years or older by June 30, 2025, and is a citizen by birth, descent, naturalisation, or a Commonwealth citizen residing in Guyana for at least one year, is eligible to be registered to vote in the upcoming elections.
GECOM is urging all eligible persons who are not yet on the Official List of Electors (OLE) to visit the registration office in their area and make a claim for inclusion. Those already on the list are also encouraged to use this time to:
Apply for a transfer if they’ve moved and are registered at an old address.
Update their name if it has changed due to marriage or other legal processes.
Correct any errors in their information on the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE).
This short but decisive period could determine the course of national leadership and governance for years to come. GECOM has made the time—now it’s up to citizens to act.
