Barbados and West Indies cricket legend the Most Honourable Desmond Haynes has been appointed to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Men’s Cricket Committee, marking yet another prestigious honour in a storied career that spans decades of excellence and service to the sport.

Haynes, a former captain of both Barbados and the West Indies, joins an esteemed panel of cricketing minds who will help shape policy and decision-making at the highest level of the game. His appointment was confirmed this week by the ICC, which also announced the reappointment of India’s Sourav Ganguly as Chair of the committee. Other members include Afghanistan’s Hamid Hassan, South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, India’s VVS Laxman (re-appointed), and England’s Jonathan Trott.

Regarded as one of the finest opening batters in cricket history, Haynes played 116 Test matches between 1978 and 1994 — the most by any Barbadian — and scored 7,487 runs at an average of 42.29. In One-Day Internationals, he made 8,648 runs in 238 appearances and was a crucial member of the West Indies squad that lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1979.

Haynes’ appointment to the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee is a recognition of his extensive cricketing knowledge, experience, and the respect he commands globally. His presence on the committee is expected to bring a valuable and balanced perspective to discussions shaping the modern game. Sportsmax
