I am not a thief, academic or otherwise, but an honest and decent citizen

Dear Editor,

I write in response to Councillor De Armas’ missive “The goal is to protect the most vulnerable …,” published March 31, 2025, in Kaieteur News. Instead of presenting empirical data to counter my arguments, Councillor De Armas resorts to an ad hominem attack to silence me and, even worse, questions my integrity. The record will show that I am not a thief, academic or otherwise, but an honest and decent citizen.

I maintain that many ratepayers in Georgetown are deeply indebted to the Municipality and City Council (M&CC), and it is crucial for the municipality to address their concerns. It is evident that Councillor De Armas and his colleagues are largely indifferent to their struggles, as they are disconnected from reality. They seem to benefit from the situation while ignoring the suffering of those facing economic hardship.

I want to reassure the ratepayers of Georgetown who are facing economic challenges that the Council is committed to finding solutions to your problems, as it is our duty. Unfortunately, all indications suggest that the Central Government is determined to prevent the M&CC from addressing these issues, and Councillor De Armas appears to be acting as an instrument of this plan. Even more troubling, he resorts to personal attacks and tries to judge his opponents by his own standards.

Yours truly,
Lelon Saul
Lt Col (Ret’d)
