The Ministry of Health’s National Tuberculosis Programme, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation and World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), has officially launched updated Tuberculosis (TB) guidelines aimed at improving the detection, treatment, and management of TB cases across Guyana.

The launch, held at the Ministry of Health Boardroom, brought together key stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and TB focal points dedicated to strengthening TB control efforts nationwide.

Delivering the feature address, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, underscored the importance of the new guidelines and their role in enhancing Guyana’s TB response. “Of course, I want to compliment our primary care physicians, some of whom have been deeply involved in this initiative. We have also been analysing sub-populations to understand where TB prevalence is highest. If we can target these areas effectively, we can achieve substantial reductions in cases,” Minister Anthony stated.

He further noted that the National Tuberculosis Programme will undergo significant transformation, with a data driven approach to tackling rising TB cases in key areas. “We now have data that shows where cases are increasing. By focusing on these areas, we can implement timely interventions and improve patient outcomes,” he said.

Minister Anthony also acknowledged the dedication of healthcare professionals, particularly those who have contributed to TB control efforts for over two decades.

PAHO/WHO Representative, Dr Kim Eva Dickson, also shared remarks, emphasising the significance of the updated guidelines in accelerating TB elimination.

“As of 2023, TB incidence in Guyana was estimated at 51 per 100,000, a significant improvement from 92 per 100,000 a decade earlier. While this progress is commendable, we must continue working towards our 2030 goal of eliminating TB, with a target incidence of 0.1 per 100,000. This requires expanding access to molecular testing, improving case detection, and ensuring the use of effective treatment regimens,” she stated.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to strengthening TB control measures, improving healthcare accessibility, and advancing public health initiatives to combat infectious diseases in Guyana.

Also present were, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh; Manager of National Tuberculosis Programme, Dr Quacy Grant and other health officials
