Aubrey Norton Rallies Behind Activist Melissa Atwell; “This is the Beginning of Another Phase of the Struggle”

Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton declared that Guyana is at a turning point, as the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has escalated its campaign against dissent.  Norton called on Guyanese at home and abroad to rally behind Melissa Atwell, a whistleblower targeted for exposing government corruption. “Melissa’s only crime is that she exposed crime, that she exposed corruption,” Norton declared.

Addressing Atwell’s supporters, Norton condemned the PPP’s attempt to silence her, warning that Melissa’s persecution is part of a larger strategy to suppress independent voices. “This is not only about an individual… today it’s Melissa, tomorrow it’s someone else,” he cautioned. He stressed the need for organization and international action, urging Guyanese abroad to write to U.S. senators and congressmen to highlight the PPP’s abuses.

The opposition leader pointed to the PPP’s growing desperation, particularly in its inability to control social media discourse. “They were losing social media, and so they believe by taking Melissa out, they will succeed,” he said. But Norton made it clear that Atwell’s fight is not hers alone. “We must not just make noise… we must continue to struggle on every front to achieve our objective.”

Norton also issued a warning about government infiltration, urging supporters to remain vigilant. “The government will place those among us… I don’t want you to fight them, but let them know we know them.”

His message was one of defiance and determination. He reminded the crowd that history has proven evil regimes do not last. “The PPP is an evil… but evil always comes to an end.” He called for unity in exposing corruption, ensuring that Melissa Atwell and others like her are protected.

Norton’s words left no doubt; this is a critical moment in Guyana’s political struggle. The government may attempt to silence its critics, but as long as people stand together, the fight for justice will continue.
