Mother who beat, dumped 6-year-old daughter in swamp charged with attempted murder, granted $300,000 bail

Drupattie Balkarran, the 25-year-old woman who beat her six-year-old daughter unconscious and then dumped her in a swamp some 500 feet away from her Lot43 Gold Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice home was on Friday granted $300,000 bail after being read attempted murder charges.

Balkarran appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Renita Singh.

The charge of intent to commit murder was read to Balkarran who was not required to plead to the offence. She was required to lodge her passport but told the Court that she does not have one.

Prosecutor, Pravan Sayhu objected to bail, while noting that the child is still in a state of shock following the incident. Say argued that Balkarran has a history of beating her daughter.

The attorney argued too that Balkarran may want to tamper with the witnesses in the matter, and begged the Court not to grant bail.

Sayhu told the Court that the Police has Balkarran’s confession to the crime.

However, the Magistrate said that the arguments posited by the Prosecutor were not sufficient to deny the accused bail and granted same in the sum of $300,000. The Magistrate however instructed Balkarran to stay 100 feet away from the child and not to make contact with her.

Further, the matter was transferred to the Reliance Magistrate s’ Court on January 27, 2021.

Meanwhile, outside the courtroom, the child’s father, Steve Ramsarran told reporters of his daughter, Jenita Ramsarran’s condition and recovery process.

Ramsarran said the child is improving slowly. “She is in a better condition than she was before. She’s coming around slow but at certain time she would be fearful and be in a corner, kind of like loss away. If you ask her a question she will just nod her head and not talk. I know she is gonna make it though. Jenita is a fighter and she will make it in life. It really takes time for things to heal and all I want is justice for my daughter,” he said.

Ramsarran said Jenita had a CT-scan done at the Balwant Singh Hospital on December 22, 2020 and it showed that the child is still suffering from a fractured skull, which according to the doctors, will take between 6-12 weeks to mend.

He disclosed that his daughter had confided in his brother about what transpired and told him that she remembered her mother hitting her with a wood in her head because she was playing and made her clothes dirty.

In December, Balkarran admitted to beating her six-year old daughter, who was found in a swamp, with a piece of wood. The child was found by her grandfather, 63-year-old Satkar Balkarran.
