Ministry of Education’s Permanent Secretary, Alfred King, presents tablets to the Peters’ family

Three children with Special Education Needs from the mining town of Linden (Region Ten) are the beneficiaries of two tablets compliments of the Ministry of Education.
The three children, 8-year-old Shaquan Peters, 13-year-old Shakira Peters and 15-year-old Shalda Peters, who all have some form of disability, received two tablets at the Minister’s Brickdam, Georgetown office recently.

Mother of the children, Nicola Peters had contacted Education Minister Priya Manickchand via social media seeking assistance to secure the tablets for her children so that they can continue learning while schools remain closed for the majority of the country’s students.

The Permanent Secretary, Alfred King presented the tablets to the children on behalf of the Education Minister. King told the children’s parents Nicola and Ovid Peters that the Ministry will continue to assist where possible. He said the Minister is passionate about ensuring that all students continue to learn during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nicola said that Shakira has not been to school for many years since she can only move around in a wheelchair or if she is assisted to do so. Notwithstanding her challenges, the mother explained that she ‘catches on’ quickly and the tablet will go a far way in ensuring that the child continues to learn.
In relation to the other children, the mother explained that Shaquan attends One Mile Primary school while Shalda attends the Special Needs School in Linden.
