By Mark DaCosta- The Guyana Police Force has successfully apprehended Ronald Balgobin, a 31-year-old taxi driver, who was wanted in connection with the alleged abduction of Basmattie “Penny” Bassant. Balgobin was taken into custody last evening at a residence in Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara. He was found hiding under a bed.

Balgobin had been sought by the authorities since last year after he was accused of abducting his former partner, Basmattie Bassant, in October 2024. The incident occurred at her home in Annandale, East Coast Demerara.

The arrest of Balgobin brings a degree of closure to the case, though the emotional and psychological scars remain for Bassant, who had previously expressed her fears and frustrations on her social media accounts.

Basmattie Bassant, a 37-year-old housewife, publicly recounted her terrifying ordeal after the abduction, sharing the harrowing details on her Facebook page. According to her account, Balgobin, along with two accomplices, forcibly took her from her home in Annandale on October 27, 2024. She described being snatched from her home while still dressed only in a bath towel. The abduction escalated as she was driven to the Linden Soesdyke Highway, where she managed to escape when a police patrol passed by. Despite her vulnerable state, she was able to run toward the officers and cry for help.

“I was completely humiliated, with no underwear or bra, just his shorts and a top,” Bassant wrote. The trauma from the incident, she explained, had been overwhelming, leaving her emotionally shattered. She noted that she had been subjected to physical and psychological abuse throughout her relationship with Balgobin, who reportedly controlled her and isolated her from family and friends.

Basant also shared her ongoing fears for her life, emphasising that Balgobin had made comments about not wanting to go to prison and had threatened her on live social media feeds. She questioned the authorities, expressing her frustration with what she perceived as a lack of action, asking, “When will I get justice? Will I be another murder victim?”

Balgobin’s capture marks a critical point in a long history of abuse that Bassant alleges to have endured during their relationship. According to her accounts, Balgobin was not only physically abusive but also used intimidation and threats to control her actions. His threats of harm if she ever left him were reportedly a common occurrence during their time together, leaving her trapped in a toxic cycle of fear and violence.

While the police have made an important breakthrough with the arrest of Balgobin, the case highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence and control, as well as the challenges victims face in seeking justice. The Guyana Police Force continues its investigation into the abduction and other related allegations, and the public remains hopeful that the case will ultimately bring justice for Bassant and others who may be suffering in silence.

The arrest of Ronald Balgobin is an important step forward, but the fight for justice and the protection of victims continues.
