Region Six entered New Year COVID-19 free – Regional Health Director

The East Berbice –Corentyne Region has entered the New Year COVID-19 free, Regional Health Director Dr. Vishalya Sharma announced Friday. Dr. Sharma said the Region’s last COVID-19 patient was discharged from the quarantine facility after fully recovering from the disease.

Over 1,500 tests were done and of those the Region had recorded 304 COVID-19 cases. As of January 1, 2021, the Region has no active cases. 80 per cent of the persons infected by the disease were asymptomatic.

Dr. Sharma said she is pleased with the efforts made by the staff and members of the Region’s COVID-19 Taskforce who worked tirelessly to control the spread of the virus.

“I would like for persons to continue adhering to the guidelines and for businesses to continue enforcing measures as we all work together to fight of COVID. With COVID-19 around, everyone has a role and a responsibility; health will do their part but it is also essential that the residents play their part,” she said.

To date, Guyana has recorded 6,348 COVID-19 cases with majority of the cases stemming from Region Four. On Friday, 16 new COVID-19 cases were recorded. The country’s death toll stands at 164.
