The most recent of the accidents occurred around 03:00hrs on New Year’s Day on Turkeyen Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara in the vicinity of CARICOM Secretariat. According to the police, the accident involved a motorcar, driven by a 31-year-old male of Better Hope North Squatting Area, E.C.D, and motorcycle, driven by Daniel Austin of Durban Street Lodge, Georgetown.

It is alleged that the motorcyclist was proceeding in the pouring rain, west along the southern side of Turkeyen Railway Embankment, and while in the vicinity of CARICOM Secretariat, the man rode into a concrete refuge on the southern side of the road. As a result, the motorcyclist fell onto the southern lane of the said road.

According to eyewitnesses after the motorcyclist fell, he remained laying on the road for a few seconds, and it during that time that time that he was struck by a passing motorcar, which was also proceeding west along the southern lane of the said road. As a result, the motorcyclist ended up under the car and was dragged over 50 feet. He received injuries about his body.

The man was picked up in a semi-conscious condition by public spirited citizen and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. There he was examined by a doctor and admitted a patient in the Accident and Emergency Unit Ward in the Critical Bay suffering from a fractured right wrist, multiple laceration to the face and right side body and head trauma. His condition is listed as stable.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on driver of the car but no trace of alcohol was found. He is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

In another accident, which occurred on Old Year’s Day at around 22:30hrs, a 28-year-old pedestrian was hit down by a speeding car on the Zeelugt Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.

According to the police, the pedestrian, Rockey Alleyne, 28, of Parika Outfall, was standing on the southern side of Zeelught Public Road when the unknown motor vehicle which was proceeding west along the southern side of the road, swerved into the corner of the road and collided with the pedestrian. The driver sped away, causing the pedestrian to fall onto the roadway where he received injuries to his head.

The 28-year-old labourer was picked up in a conscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was treated him for his injuries and sent away. Checks were made in the area for the motorcar but proved futile. The police are continuing their investigation.

The police are also investigating another accident, which occurred on Old Year’s Day at around 17:00hrs on Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

The accident involved a lorry and a car being driven by a 33-year-old male of Enmore, East Coast Demerara and a 26-year-old male of Block ‘X’ Diamond Housing Scheme, EBD, respectively.

Investigations thus far revealed that the lorry was proceeding north along the western side of the road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed, and as the driver was in the process of swerving from a pot hole he lost control and ended up into the path of the car which was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road, resulting in a head on collision.

The drivers of the vehicles along with two other occupants of the motor lorry and one of the motor car were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit in serious but stable conditions.
