Hailing from the small, close-knit village of Ulverston (Region 6), Andel Downer has carved out a path that not only elevates his students but inspires his community. A dedicated teacher at the Winifred Gaskin Memorial Secondary School, Andel specialises in Agricultural Science, boasting over five years of teaching experience. He is passionate about guiding young minds and watching his students grow into responsible, contributing members of society.
Beyond his professional life, Andel is an avid traveller, finding solace in exploring new parts of the country whenever he gets a break from the classroom. His personal and professional ambitions recently took a significant step forward with the completion of his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with distinction from the University of Guyana. Now, he’s considering the possibility of a master’s degree—though he’s undecided on the journey toward a doctoral title.
Andel’s academic journey began during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, fresh from the Cyril Potter College of Education(CPCE), he grappled with his first class of Agricultural Science students during lockdowns and remote learning, he faced the uphill challenge of preparing them for exams with limited resources and face-to-face time. However to his surprise, all but one of his students passed, a testament to his resilience and adaptability in unprecedented times. Reflecting on this, he expressed gratitude to the colleagues who supported him and the friends who never let him give up.
Transitioning to hybrid learning wasn’t easy for Andel, a teacher who thrives on in-person interaction. Yet, he persisted, even amidst personality clashes at work, technology challenges, and the unique demands of group work at university. Alongside cherished colleagues like Ms. Leesia, Ms. Newland, Ms. Mell, and the former Headmistress Ms. Odetta Johnson, Andel found camaraderie and support. Their encouragement made the inevitable challenges more manageable.
Andel also found invaluable allies in his fellow students whom he credits for making university life memorable, especially in difficult group projects and intensive courses like Statistics and Algebra. Persevering through sleepless nights and setbacks, Andel found success through the consistent encouragement from his Mom, friends especially Cinty, Radesh, Marlyn, Nigel, Randy, the confidentials, amongst others and mentors like Ms. Bacchus and Mr. Bullen.
His advice to aspiring students? “Surround yourself with driven people, don’t be too hard on yourself, and make time for laughter—even when things are beyond your control. And if you’re pursuing a BSc in Agriculture, never skip Mr. Bullen’s Saturday sessions!”
On Saturday, Andel is set to graduate from the University of Guyana Tain Campus with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science.
Andel’s academic journey is a reminder of the strength it takes to pursue and achieve a dream, the resilience to meet challenges, and the importance of a supportive community. Whether or not he eventually adds “Dr.” to his name, Andel Downer’s journey is a powerful testament to dedication, patience, and the lasting impact of an educator’s guidance.
