Dear Editor,

Young students became the backdrop to political propaganda yesterday, as Minister of Education Priya Manickchand and President Irfaan Ali delivered speeches filled with out-of-place political rhetoric.

The event, which was meant to honor 180 years of solemn history, was instead marred by inappropriate messaging that many found distasteful. This event was an occasion which required dignity and respect, not self-serving political commentary.

Some parents have compared the scenario to the hypothetical outrage if former President David Granger had used a similar stage to highlight issues like the corruption, extrajudicial killings, or money laundering for which the PPP has become well known.

The use of children as political props is unethical and a shameful misuse of an important event.

Thank you
