On the evening of Monday, July 29, police apprehended a 25-year-old man in connection with the death of Miracarmen Rodrigues Serrano, a 26-year-old sex worker from Santa Elena De Vaire, Venezuela. The tragic incident took place earlier that day at Quartzstone Landing in Region 7.

Initial investigations reveal a night of drinking and socialising that turned deadly. Around 2:00 a.m., Miracarmen, the suspect, and several others were partaking in alcohol at a local shop. The suspect and Miracarmen left the shop together and went to her room, where an arrangement was made for paid sexual services. However, they did not engage in intercourse at that time and returned to the shop to continue drinking.

According to the 36-year-old owner of the shop and the ‘Caimu’ where Miracarmen resided, around 3:00 a.m., he noticed the pair leaving the shop again and heading to her room. Shortly after, he heard noises coming from the room, which he assumed were consensual. Believing nothing was amiss, he went to bed.

A few minutes later, he heard the door to Miracarmen’s room open and someone leaving. When he checked, he found Miracarmen lying on the floor, dressed in a white top and with her underwear on one foot. Rather than seeking immediate help, he locked the door and went back to bed, a decision that may raise concerns about his actions that night.

It was only around 7:30 a.m. that the shop owner checked on her again, finding her still unconscious and in the same position. Realising the severity of the situation, he alerted others and reported the matter to the police. Tragically, Miracarmen was declared dead while being transported to Quartzstone Waterfront.

Responding swiftly, police arrested the suspect at approximately 7:00 p.m. During interrogation, he confessed to the chain of events. After an initial consensual sexual encounter, the suspect requested another round without additional payment. When Miracarmen resisted and bit him in self-defence, he reacted violently. In a fit of rage, he strangled her before forcefully engaging in intercourse again, leaving her unconscious on the floor and fleeing the scene.

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by sex workers in our country and the urgent need for better protective measures. The suspect remains in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The events at Quartzstone Landing have not only spotlighted the dangers sex workers face but also the responsibilities of community members in reporting and preventing crimes.
