The constant blackout Guyanese experience is taking a toll. I spoke with some leaders last Friday who are upset with the situation but fearful if they speak out about the situation they risk political victimisation and the commoner Bharrat Jagdeo cussing them out publicly.
In oil rich Guyana deprivation is pervasive and fear stalks the land.
Addressing the electricity issue today is twofold:- one is that the citizens deserve better, and the other is that I shall speak my mind, fearlessly, whilst the basic needs of the people go unattended.
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is licensed to generate and distribute electricity on the coastland, and it must be held accountable for doing so. Yet ever so often this nation sees the political interference and meddling of Jagdeo and his sidekick Irfaan Ali rather than having the GPL management answer to the citizens.
When the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) assumed government in 2020, they inherited a company that was delivering electricity to customers and had in place a planned expansion programme.
Within a short period, the nation was plunged into darkness due to constant blackouts. Rather than seeking to correct the situation, we get this daily circus of Ali or Jagdeo, alternating in the role of Chief Clown, believing the nation wants to be entertained with their blame game antics.
As our lives are being challenged with this ongoing problem the PPP regime must be told we deserve an electricity company that can deliver optimum service. When ordinary citizens must deal with blackout the standby generator at the ministers and the privileged homes kicks in.
This nation needs answers, and we need them now. We want to know:
- Why so many persons from GPL’s technical staff were removed during the PPP regime?
- What are the reasons behind their removal?
- What are the reasons for purchasing several generators and many are yet to be installed?
The public has several views on the matter and it is very important that this be said.
Yours truly is reliably informed a company involving government and private sector personnel has been registered in Dubai. This company is working with a foreign company in a joint venture to control the electricity sector in Guyana. To achieve its objective, the regime has embarked on a programme to bring GPL to its knees, which will cause dissatisfaction among the citizens who will be accepting any news of foreign help. Inherent in this plan is the desire to have Guyana spend massive amount of money on spares for rehabilitation at cost beyond market price. This is part of the PPP’s heist on the state’s resources.
