President Irfaan Ali has pledged government support for Guyana’s bid to host the Over-40s T20 World Cup in 2027, as 15 teams gathered at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, on Friday for the opening of the second International Masters Cricket Over-40s World Cup.
Ali welcomed the participating teams and urged players to use the occasion to strengthen international friendships and promote cultural exchange.
“Sports is not only about a game; sports is about relationships. It is about bringing people together. It’s about fusing cultures. It’s about bridging inequalities. It’s about celebration of life, and this tournament speaks to those important elements of sports,” the president said.
He assured organisers that his administration would support their efforts to secure the 2027 event and encouraged visiting players and their families to explore Guyana during their stay.
“If there is anything anyone on the team needs, just let us know. Minister Jacobs is here with you, and we will try our best to make your stay here as comfortable as you may want it to be,” Ali said.
The 15 participating teams include defending champions South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England, the United Arab Emirates and the West Indies. Matches began on Saturday at venues across Guyana.
The West Indies, captained by former international wicketkeeper-batter Denesh Ramdin, were scheduled to face Australia at Providence. The regional squad also includes former West Indies players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jason Mohammed, Narsingh Deonarine and Devendra Bishoo.
Ali commended the players for maintaining their commitment to cricket, saying sport promotes discipline, mental resilience and positive engagement within families and communities.
“Sports is that important product that allows us to remain competitive, to remain focused, to remain mentally strong, and to remain inspiration for our families, our communities, our clubs, and our country,” he said.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs said Guyana’s sporting facilities and expanding calendar of international competitions were helping establish the country as a venue for major events.
Citing competitions such as the Global Super League, Jacobs said, “Guyana is definitely a sporting destination in 2026,” while thanking Ali for his support for sports development.
The masters competition brings together former international and national players who continue to compete beyond the conventional playing years, while providing opportunities to build relationships across countries.
Guyana’s bid to host the 2027 Over-40s T20 World Cup would add another international cricket event to the country’s sporting calendar.
