Dear Editor,

I wish to express my profound concern regarding the changing of the name of McKenzie Sports Club to McKenzie Stadium, particularly in light of the institution’s rich history, its original purpose, and its significance to the people of Linden.

McKenzie Sports Club was not merely a sporting facility established for public recreation. It was a members’ club constructed by the Demerara Bauxite Company (DEMBA) and, on 8th December 2026, handed over to a Committee of Management to facilitate recreational activities for non-management workers. This historical arrangement was significant because it provided workers with a dedicated space to participate in sporting, social and recreational activities outside their working environment.

The establishment of the club represented an important chapter in the social and sporting development of the bauxite-mining community. It provided an avenue for workers to develop their sporting talents, foster camaraderie, promote discipline and teamwork, and strengthen the sense of community that has long characterised Linden.

Against this historical background, the decision to change the name from McKenzie Sports Club to McKenzie Stadium raises legitimate questions about whether sufficient consideration has been given to the institution’s origins, heritage and longstanding identity.

A sports club and a stadium are not necessarily the same institution. A stadium generally refers to a sporting venue or physical facility, whereas a club represents an organised body with a history, identity, membership, traditions and, potentially, a governance structure. Consequently, changing the name of McKenzie Sports Club to McKenzie Stadium may be perceived as more than a simple adjustment in terminology. It could represent a departure from the identity under which the institution was established and has been recognised for generations.

It is acknowledged that facilities must evolve to accommodate modern sporting requirements, increased public use and national development objectives. Improvements, renovations and expansion are welcomed when they contribute to the advancement of sports and recreation in Linden. However, modernisation should not automatically require the abandonment of the historical name and identity of an institution that has served the community for decades.

Development should preserve heritage, not erase it.

Before any permanent change is made, I believe that the relevant authorities should provide a clear explanation of the rationale behind the decision and establish whether the original Committee of Management, former members, sporting organisations, historical stakeholders and the wider Linden community were adequately consulted.

It is also important to clarify whether the intention is simply to designate the physical facility as McKenzie Stadium while preserving McKenzie Sports Club as an institution, or whether the name change is intended to replace the club entirely. These are two distinctly different matters and should not be treated as interchangeable.

If the intention is to develop a modern stadium while preserving the club’s historic identity, a reasonable approach would be to recognise both names in a manner that respects the past while accommodating the future. For example, the facility could be designated McKenzie Stadium, home of McKenzie Sports Club, subject to the relevant ownership, governance and legal arrangements.

Such an approach would allow Linden to embrace modernisation without disregarding the historical circumstances under which the club was established in 1956.

Ultimately, the significance of McKenzie Sports Club extends beyond its physical structures. Its value lies in its history, the workers for whom it was established, the generations of sportsmen and women who used its facilities, and the memories and traditions associated with its name.

The people of Linden deserve to understand the reasons for this change and to have their historical heritage treated with the respect it deserves. Decisions concerning institutions of such long-standing community importance should be guided by transparency, consultation and a genuine appreciation of their origins.

I therefore respectfully call on the relevant authorities to reconsider the implications of this name change, engage the Linden community and ensure that the historical identity of McKenzie Sports Club is not lost in the process of modernisation.

McKenzie Sports Club is part of Linden’s history. Its legacy deserves to be preserved, respected and passed on to future generations.

Yours respectfully,

A Concerned Citizen of Linden
