For the fifth consecutive year, Recover Guyana has partnered with One Communications for Pinktober, continuing its commitment to breast cancer awareness, early detection and meaningful support for persons affected by cancer. The organisation officially commenced its 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities on October 2 with a special event at Maharaja Palace celebrating the strength, courage and resilience of cancer survivors. The gathering reinforced a central message of this year’s campaign: Breast Cancer Awareness Month must extend beyond wearing pink – it must translate awareness into meaningful action.

Thirteen cancer survivors were honoured during the event: Deborah Johnson-Jones, Judy Bayley, Zoreen Alli Outar, Hermanetta Andrews, Trudy Cummings, Roneta Williams, Lakshmin Narayan, Sarita Halim, Sremala Churaman, Chandrawattie Samaroo, Sylvia Dias, Chandrattie Singh and Nalini Boodanrine. As part of its commitment to supporting their continued health and wellbeing, Recover Guyana and its partners provided GY$100,000 to each survivor in direct financial support. Each survivor also received a GY$35,000 dental voucher from Flawless Dental GY and a GY$20,000 voucher from S&K Imports GY.

Recover Guyana has continued to emphasize that the national conversation surrounding breast cancer must place greater focus on early detection, access to screening, survivor wellbeing and sustained community support. As part of this effort, the organization also provided financial support to The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc. to assist with its screening activities during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Recover Guyana believes that civil society and the private sector can play an important role in complementing national efforts by helping to expand awareness, mobilize resources and ensure that survivors and patients feel supported throughout their journeys.

The October 2 event represents the beginning of a wider programme of activities throughout the month. Recover Guyana will participate in the Youths on the Rise Guyana Cancer Awareness Walk on October 11, followed by World Food Day activities and a healthy basket drive for cancer patients on October 16. The organization will also participate in the OnePinktober Walk/Run on October 25, before concluding its month of activities on October 31 with PINKSunflower – The Conversation with Survivors, providing a platform for survivors to share their experiences, challenges and messages of hope while encouraging greater awareness and early detection.

As Recover Guyana marks five consecutive years of collaboration with One Communications for Pinktober, the organisation extends its appreciation to One Communications, Flawless Dental GY, S&K Imports GY and all supporters contributing to this year’s activities. Behind every pink ribbon is a person, a family and a story. Recover Guyana’s message this October is clear: celebrate those who have survived, stand with those still fighting, encourage early detection, and ensure that awareness is followed by action.
