The government is advancing the digitalisation of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), with registration and contribution services expected to become fully available online from October 15, 2026.
Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, disclosed the timeline during an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) as government reflects on its first year in office following the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s re-election in September 2025.
Minister Ally said the digital transformation of NIS is intended to make essential services more accessible and convenient, reducing the need for citizens to visit physical offices to conduct routine transactions.
“By October 15 of this year, we should have the registrations and contributions fully online, fully digital,” the minister said.
The transformation will continue in phases, with compliance and benefits services expected to be fully digitalised by the end of 2026. Once implemented, citizens will be able to access these services remotely using their mobile phones, tablets or computers, further reducing travel, waiting time and dependence on in-person transactions.
The NIS digitalisation programme forms part of the government’s wider effort to move Guyana beyond simply converting paper-based records into digital formats and towards the full digitalisation of public services.
Over the past year, government has accelerated this transformation through a number of citizen-focused initiatives, including digital platforms, online appointment systems and the expansion of Integrated Government Service Centres across the country.
Minister Ally emphasised that the transition to digital services will not exclude citizens who may have limited access to technology or require assistance navigating online systems.
The government has established physical service centres and help desks at Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) to support citizens, particularly senior citizens, as more public services move online.
The ongoing NIS transformation represents another step in the government’s broader objective of creating a more efficient, accessible and citizen-centred public service, where routine transactions can increasingly be completed without lengthy travel or physical queues.
