Chinelle Henry produced a stunning last-ball finish on Sunday as Jamaica Empress snatched a dramatic one-wicket victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors in their Women’s Caribbean Premier League debut at Kensington Oval.

Henry smashed back-to-back sixes from the final two deliveries to complete a remarkable chase after Jamaica entered the final over needing 17 runs with only three wickets in hand. The Empress finished on 136-9 from 19 overs, chasing a revised target of 132 after rain reduced the innings.

The result looked increasingly unlikely after Guyana fought back brilliantly during the middle and closing stages of Jamaica’s chase.

The Warriors had posted 138-7 from their 20 overs after recovering from a difficult start that left them 19-2 during the powerplay.

Shemaine Campbelle led the recovery with a powerful 56 from 33 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, while Realeanna Grimmond contributed 45 from 46 balls. The pair added 97 for the third wicket before Grimmond was dismissed, triggering a late collapse.

Guyana slipped from 104-2 to 114-5, losing three wickets for just 10 runs. Captain Chloe Tryon attempted to steady the innings and finished unbeaten on 21 from 16 balls, but the Warriors lost their final five wickets for only 22 runs.

Jamaica appeared to have control of the chase early.

Australian Meg Lanning struck 31 from 21 balls as the Empress raced to 48-1 after five overs. Rashada Williams also made 31 from 28 balls, while Djenaba Joseph scored 19.

But the Warriors refused to surrender.

Their bowlers ripped through the Jamaica middle order, with five wickets falling for only 16 runs and the match suddenly swinging back in Guyana’s favour. Erin Burns took two wickets for just three runs, while Shabnim Ismail claimed 2-29.

Then came Henry.

The Jamaican all-rounder remained unbeaten on 41 from just 21 deliveries, striking three fours and four sixes. With eight runs required from the final two balls, she delivered under immense pressure, clearing the boundary twice to complete one of the most dramatic finishes in WCPL history.

The victory gives the Jamaica Empress a memorable start to their WCPL campaign as newcomers, while the Warriors are left to reflect on a match they appeared capable of winning after producing a remarkable late fightback.

For Guyana, the defeat will be particularly painful because the Warriors had recovered from a poor start with the bat, fought back with the ball and appeared to have Jamaica under control in the final over.

Instead, Henry’s extraordinary finish turned victory into heartbreak.
