Facebook users who believe that selecting “Delete account” immediately and permanently removes their account may be surprised to learn that the process is not instantaneous.
Meta’s system places an account into a deletion period after the user requests permanent deletion. During that period, the deletion can generally be cancelled by logging back into the account. The cancellation period is typically 30 days, although Meta notes that the exact timeframe can vary by region.
Only after that period expires is the account considered permanently deleted and unrecoverable.
That makes deletion fundamentally different from deactivation.
Deactivation is essentially a temporary measure. It hides the account from other users while leaving the account and its information intact. The owner can reactivate it by logging back in.
Deletion, by contrast, is intended to permanently remove the account and its associated information. But even after deletion is requested, the account remains within a recovery window before the process becomes irreversible.
This distinction is particularly important for users concerned about unauthorised access.
If the objective is to have an account disappear immediately and ensure that no one can log in and restore it during the recovery period, Facebook does not provide a feature to bypass or waive that period.
In other words, clicking “Delete account” starts the deletion process; it does not instantly erase the account beyond recovery.
Users should therefore understand exactly which option they are selecting. Deactivation temporarily hides an account. Deletion begins the process of permanently removing it—but permanent deletion only takes effect after the applicable cancellation period has expired.
