U.S. Region PNCR Calls for Full Accountability, Justice After MV Barima Tragedy

The MV Barima was a vessel of unity, carrying within its hold the rich tapestry of Guyanese life, comprising individuals from all walks of life, from every race, religion, and political affiliation. In death, as in life aboard that vessel, we were bound together as one people, sharing a common destiny. This catastrophe tragically underscores the truth that calamity does not discriminate; it recognizes neither party affiliation nor economic boundaries. As we confront this unimaginable grief collectively, we must firmly resolve to stand united as one nation. This tragedy transcends all divisions!

As we pay tribute to all the victims of this horrible tragedy, we call for accountability and justice! Reports regarding this disaster are deeply unsettling. It is now public knowledge that the vessel was significantly overloaded, with as many as 179 souls on board, despite a manifest indicating only 133, and twice the allowed tonnage. Furthermore, it is alarming that the captain and at least one crew member allegedly tested positive for narcotics. These revelations raise grave concerns regarding oversight, maintenance, and the responsibility that allowed an antiquated vessel to operate unsafely. These issues cannot be dismissed as mere administrative lapses; they represent profound moral failures—a breach of the sacred trust established between those entrusted with governance and the citizens they are sworn to safeguard.

As Guyanese people, at home and abroad, we will not accept anything less than full accountability. We must insist upon decisive action against all individuals in positions of responsibility for this calamity; those at the helm as well as those in oversight roles who tolerated systemic negligence. Investigations must be thorough, transparent, and free from political interference. Those found culpable must face the full force of the law.

In this moment, we are a nation called to unity! In light of this tragedy, we call upon all Guyanese, irrespective of political affiliation, ethnic background, or socioeconomic status, to unite in demanding justice for the departed and their families. This moment calls for moral clarity and collective action. Families who grieve deserve more than empty reassurances and delayed inquiries. They deserve answers, accountability, and assurance that their loved ones did not fall victim in vain and they deserve closure.

The United States Region of the People’s National Congress Reform stands in steadfast solidarity with the grieving families of Guyana. We pledge to utilize our voices, resources, and position within the diaspora to amplify the demand for justice and support initiatives aimed at preventing such horrors from recurring.

To the families who have suffered the tragic loss of cherished sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends aboard the MV Barima; to the survivors enduring the weight of profound trauma; and to the entire Guyanese nation both at home and across the diaspora: You are not alone. Your suffering mirrors our own. Your loss is our shared burden. Your quest for justice is ours as well. We extend our sincerest and deepest condolences during this harrowing time. The events that unfolded in the depths of the dark waters off the coast of Guyana are not merely an accident—they constitute a grave human tragedy that has irreparably impacted our communities and left an enduring scar on our collective conscience. We stand with you. We mourn with you. And we shall not rest until accountability is achieved.
