A report published on February 13, 2026 by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship News (BCCCC News) is warning that water scarcity has become one of the most urgent global challenges, with serious humanitarian, environmental, and economic consequences. The report highlights that although more than 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, only about 0.5% is accessible freshwater—a supply that is rapidly shrinking due to climate change, pollution, and rising global demand.
According to the analysis, recent years have seen some of the driest conditions for rivers in decades, alongside declining reservoir levels and worsening droughts affecting nearly 40% of the world’s land area. These conditions are already disrupting food systems, energy production, and public health, particularly in vulnerable regions with limited infrastructure.
The human impact is significant, with nearly four billion people experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year. The report warns that without meaningful intervention, worsening water stress could displace hundreds of millions of people by 2030, intensifying migration pressures and global instability. Children and low-income communities are expected to bear the greatest burden.
Beyond its humanitarian toll, the report also underscores the economic risks, noting that billions of dollars in global value are lost annually due to inadequate water access, while key industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and energy face growing threats to their operations and supply chains.
Despite the scale of the crisis, the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship News points to a range of solutions, including improved water management, investment in infrastructure, more efficient agricultural practices, and stronger corporate leadership in sustainability. It concludes that the actions taken now by governments, businesses, and investors will determine whether global water systems can be stabilized or pushed closer to collapse.
