GEORGETOWN, Guyana– Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has made explosive allegations that investigators ignored evidence allegedly linking a vehicle in the Ricardo Fagundes murder investigation to an associate of convicted drug trafficker Roger Khan, while instead launching what he describes as a coordinated effort to falsely implicate him and his former employees.
In a lengthy social media address released Tuesday, Mohamed claimed that documents already in the possession of investigators identify the purchaser of a white Toyota Fielder wagon, allegedly connected to the Fagundes investigation, as Shamroy Omar Stewart, whom Mohamed described as a former security guard and close associate of Roger Khan. Mohamed questioned why police have allegedly failed to aggressively pursue that lead while repeatedly reopening the investigation to focus on him.
Mohamed went further, alleging that the Regional Security System (RSS), which assisted in the investigation, documented inconsistencies in statements given by Roger Khan following the murder. He claimed the report concluded that Khan inaccurately stated that Fagundes was driving the vehicle on the night of the killing, despite CCTV footage allegedly showing Khan behind the wheel. Mohamed also claimed Khan failed to disclose the presence of a third person in the vehicle. Based on those alleged inconsistencies, Mohamed asked why investigators were not questioning Khan instead of targeting him.
Mohamed then accused the Government of Guyana and senior members of the Guyana Police Force of orchestrating an elaborate political campaign to frame him for the unsolved murder. He alleged that the latest developments came shortly after he publicly exposed what he described as President Irfaan Ali’s 150-acre “mega farm,” claiming that the renewed investigation was ordered in retaliation for his anti-corruption campaign.
According to Mohamed, two of his former employees have now spent six days in police lockups without being charged. He alleged that investigators have repeatedly pressured both men to falsely implicate him in the murder, promising rewards and favorable treatment in exchange for statements against him. Mohamed said both men refused despite the alleged pressure and remain detained.
The Opposition Leader also claimed this was only the latest in a series of failed attempts to implicate him. He alleged that investigators previously attempted to persuade convicted prisoners to accuse him in exchange for assistance with their cases, approached alleged carjackers with offers of money to falsely identify him as the purchaser of the white Fielder wagon, and sought similar statements from former staff members. According to Mohamed, each effort failed because those approached refused to provide what he described as fabricated testimony.
Mohamed also referenced an audio recording circulating on social media, which he said features the son of an auto dealer alleging that police refused to release his father unless he changed his statement to falsely implicate one of Mohamed’s former employees. Mohamed further alleged that the recording identifies a senior public official as encouraging cooperation with investigators despite the alleged falsehoods. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Calling the developments a direct assault on the rule of law, Mohamed appealed to the Judicial Service Commission, the Police Service Commission, members of the judiciary, and human rights organizations to intervene. He argued that innocent citizens were being deprived of their liberty for political purposes and warned that public confidence in the independence of Guyana’s justice system was being severely undermined.
Mohamed concluded by asserting that previous efforts to destroy his political career through murder allegations, tax investigations, traffic matters, rape allegations and other legal proceedings had all failed. He said additional information concerning an investigation involving AK-47 rifles would be released in a future statement.
At the time of publication, the Government of Guyana, the Guyana Police Force, and the officials named by Mohamed had not publicly responded to these latest allegations. The Village Voice has not independently verified the claims made in Mohamed’s social media statement.
