Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr. Ashni Singh today visited the Brickdam Police Station as he continues performing the functions of Minister of Home Affairs in the absence of the substantive Minister, the Honourable Oneidge Walrond who is currently overseas on official duty.
Speaking during the visit to the modern edifice slated to be opened by the end of this year, Dr. Singh said the new building represents the investment made by President Irfaan Ali’s government in a modern, technologically equipped, intelligence-driven citizen-friendly police force.
“Notwithstanding that the genesis of the project lies in the loss of the old Brickdam Police Station by fire, its rebuilding in such an impressive manner was intended to convey an important statement- that our government places the highest importance on ensuring a modern and effective Guyana Police Force (GPF) and one that is committed to and capable of safeguarding the security and safety of the Guyanese people,” the Minister emphasized.
Construction of the new modern police station commenced following destruction of the old Brickdam Police Station as a result of a fire in 2021. The structure will replace the old Eve Leary Headquarters through the relocation of all central police services, namely traffic, finance, and divisional command offices.
It was constructed of concrete, glass, and steel and as part of its safety installations, the modern high-rise edifice is designed to be earthquake-resistant and includes modern fire safety systems, CCTV, and an expanded communication network.
Joining the Minister on the tour of the new Brickdam National Security Tower were Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Andre Ally.
Meanwhile, the GPF is currently observing its 187th anniversary with celebrations continuing throughout this month with a Fitness Walk, Rugby Games, a Welfare Day, the Fallen Heroes (Wreath Laying) Ceremony, President’s National Clean Up Initiative, 5-A-Side Inter-Regions (Male & Female) Football Competitions, the Commissioner of Police T-20 Cricket Finals, an Awards Ceremony, a Night of Fights, a Road Relay, an Annual Swimming Championship and a Track & Field Championship.
