Dear Editor,
With Aubrey Norton leading the PNCR members are leaving, so membership fees are reduced. Supporters are running away from the party and donations are smaller. The big donations are only made to parties who stand a chance of winning elections. At this juncture, PNCR chances of winning any elections with Aubrey Compton Norton leading the party are infinitesimal. Politics is about gaining power, winning elections, and protecting your constituents. Mr. Norton is clearly failing on all three of those fronts. Thus, there’s no strategic value in Norton’s continued leadership. The main beneficiary of the status quo is the PPP/C regime.
There’s no accountability in the PNCR because Norton has rid the party of all the independent people and institutions. The current Central Executive Committee (CEC) has been populated by his hand-picked yes men and women, and minions. Even these blind followers are beginning to sense that the future of the PNCR is fraught with danger, if something is not done. It’s in the nature of this group to be loyal to the failed leader, but some groans are being heard.
However, the catalyst for change will not come from the PNCR’S internal systems but most likely from the various groups. This has started with one group from Region 2, but an avalanche is needed. For the survival of the PNCR and for opposition unity now would be a good time to up the pressure. The chorus for Norton’s resignation or removal should grow louder. If the PNCR members don’t even have the guts to fight Aubrey Norton, how will the people of Guyana have confidence that the party is capable of fighting the PPP/C regime. The message will be sent that the PNCR consists of people with sheepish inclinations.
There is also a funding crisis. The PNCR’s main sources of current funds are donations from PPP/C regime sympathizers who are happy with the status quo and opposition disunity, a dwilinding subscriber base, and selling party assets that Burnham, Hoyte, and the WRSM acquired over the years. That’s not sustainable! Anyone with a modicum of analytical ability would know that the status quo is untenable.
If the failed leadership of Aubrey “Selfish” Norton continues, things may get worse. The PNCR is becoming weaker every day because of Norton. That’s the reality that his kool-aid drinking, cult-like Bam Bam Alley followers don’t understand. Thus, it’s time for the intelligent members and supporters of the PNCR to tell Aubrey Compton Norton: “Your time is up, survival of the party is more important than your bruised ego.” Go in peace or you will be thrown out like a bum!
Yours truly,
Brian Collison
