Citizens, particularly the most vulnerable among us — senior citizens and those residing in rural and hinterland areas — are facing a bewildering and burdensome process that stands in stark contrast to the promises made by the current administration.
The APNU’s statement, – released on May 29 – underscores a growing wave of frustration as citizens report a list of issues surrounding the registration and distribution of this much-publicised cash grant. Many individuals are caught in a web of lengthy and cumbersome registration procedures, with delays stretching beyond acceptable limits. It is disheartening to learn that, despite the government’s assurances of a quick payout process, countless beneficiaries are being left to navigate a system full of confusion and inefficiency. In numerous cases, individuals have waited for more than a month after finishing the registration process without receiving the funds they were led to believe would be promptly dispensed.
The distressing impact of these delays is particularly pronounced among elderly citizens who are often required to travel considerable distances to registration centres, only to face long lines and repeated visits with little clarity on their prospects of assistance. The APNU articulated a poignant truth when they stated, “The people of Guyana should not be forced to beg, wait endlessly, or endure unnecessary humiliation to access support that belongs to them as citizens of this country.” This present scenario poses a stark contradiction to the government’s proclaimed commitment to supporting its citizens and reducing hardship.
