(CARICOM Member States on Wednesday welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) adoption of the resolution on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the obligations of states with respect to climate change.
Her Excellency Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, and current Chair of the CARICOM Caucus of Permanent Representatives in New York, addressed the UNGA on behalf of CARICOM Member States, while Her Excellency Janine Felson, Permanent Representative of Belize to the United Nations, spoke on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States, AOSIS.

The landmark General Assembly resolution adopted on Wednesday is “a powerful affirmation” of international law, climate justice and science, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. When the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN’s principal judicial body, ruled in July 2025 that States have an obligation to protect the environment from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the decision was hailed as a breakthrough. The UN chief described it simply as “a victory for our planet”. (CARICOM)
