By Mark DaCosta- Amidst growing public scrutiny, Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond, finds herself at the centre of a scandal involving her son’s recent mishap with a government-issued vehicle. In light of the matter, brought to light by the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, citizens are demanding clarity and accountability from both the minister and the government, particularly in light of the ruling People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) stated commitment to transparency.
The alleged incident has raised significant concerns, particularly regarding the propriety of government resources being used by family members of those in power. Walrond’s son was reportedly involved in an accident with a multimillion-dollar vehicle that belongs to the state, with witnesses claiming he was spotted at a local nightclub shortly before the event. This situation begs the question: how can we trust our leaders when their families are seemingly above the law?

Critics have voiced that rather than ensuring adequate oversight and public safety, the current administration appears to favour silence over transparency. The lack of communication following the incident has exacerbated public outrage, particularly as media inquiries directed at the Minister’s office have gone unanswered. Reporters have sought to ascertain whether a breathalyser test was administered or if the authorities were promptly notified, yet the silence from officials has only intensified suspicions regarding the handling of the matter.
Walrond who serves as a technocrat minister and was appointed by President Irfaan Ali in August 2020, has not only a responsibility to the citizens of our nation but also a need to uphold the integrity of her office. Prior to her ministerial role, she cultivated a career in law, serving as both a magistrate and advisor in the Ministry of Legal Affairs. Given her background, the expectation is that she would advocate for a rigorous application of the law — especially when it comes to ensuring that government vehicles are used responsibly and lawfully.
The alarming incident should serve as a wake-up call. While the minister has worked to promote our country as a premier destination for tourism and sustainable development, her family’s involvement in this mishap deeply contrasts with the image of accountability her ministry projects. Waldron and her office must take immediate steps to rectify the situation, starting with a thorough investigation into the accident and a commitment to public transparency regarding the findings.
This event resonates heavily with the populace, many of whom have grown weary of political elitism and the perception that those in power are shielded from the consequences of their actions. Minister Walrond’s office should acknowledge their shortcomings in communication and approach the public with honesty rather than deflection. The call for equality before the law has never been clearer, as citizens demand that enforcement is not a privilege reserved for a select few.
In a time when transparency and accountability should be at the forefront, the actions — or lack thereof — of the PPP government continue to fuel dissatisfaction. For the sake of our nation’s integrity and the trust of its people, it is imperative that the Minister of Home Affairs immediately addresses these serious concerns and reaffirms her commitment to equitable governance. Only through responsible leadership and decisive action can the government begin to restore faith among its constituents.
