The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has announced the postponement of its annual event commemorating the work, life, and legacy of its founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, citing ongoing inclement weather.
In a statement, the party said the event, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Babu Jaan on the Corentyne Coast, Berbice, will no longer take place as planned. According to the PPP, “this decision has been taken in the interest of public safety,” given the prevailing weather conditions affecting parts of the country.
The party noted that a new date for the observance will be announced in due course and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, thanking the public for their understanding.
Dr. Cheddi Jagan (1918–1997) was a central figure in Guyana’s political development and is widely regarded as one of the country’s founding leaders. Born at Port Mourant, he trained as a dentist in the United States, studying at Howard University and Northwestern University, where he was exposed to anti-colonial ideas, labour activism, and African American civil rights struggles that helped shape his political outlook.
