Guyana’s attainment of Republican status on February 23, 1970 under the Forbes Burnham led People’s National Congress (PNC) government was highlighted as a defining milestone in the country’s history during the Region Four Democratic Council’s 56th Republic Anniversary flag raising ceremony at Triumph, East Coast Demerara. The occasion, held Friday, served as a reminder that the transition to a Cooperative Republic marked Guyana’s full assertion of sovereignty and its commitment to self governance.
Delivering the feature address, Minister within the Ministry of Housing Vanessa Benn said the observance of Republic Day goes beyond ceremony and represents a reaffirmation of national pride, unity, and citizens’ responsibility in shaping the nation’s future. Cultural performances at the regional compound, including poetry, dance, drumming and steel orchestra renditions, reflected Guyana’s diversity and reinforced its identity as a unified multicultural society.
Minister Benn urged those gathered to appreciate the significance of Guyana’s republican journey, noting that the country’s status affirms its independent decision making and constitutional authority. “We make our own decisions. We have our own parliament. We have our own Head-of-State… we are a sovereign state,” she stated.
The minister also outlined development initiatives targeting Region Four, the country’s most populous region and economic centre, pointing to $15.9 billion allocated in the national budget for agriculture, public works, health and education. According to Benn, these investments are intended to strengthen service delivery and improve living standards across communities.
She further noted that Mashramani, which commemorates the country’s republican achievement, should inspire reflection on Guyana’s historical journey and the shared responsibility of citizens to advance national development.
The ceremony formed part of activities leading up to the 56th anniversary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, being observed under the theme “Expressing our culture through innovation and creativity.” Among those attending were Regional Chairman Clemsford Belgrave, Vice Chairman Deoraj Nauth, and other officials of the Region Four Democratic Council.
