The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has welcomed the nomination of Sir Clive Lloyd as President of Lancashire County Cricket Club, calling it a fitting honour for one of cricket’s most distinguished figures. Lancashire’s board has unanimously endorsed Lloyd’s nomination, with formal ratification expected at the club’s upcoming Annual General Meeting.

For Guyana and the Caribbean, the appointment represents a symbolic return to the English county where Lloyd built a remarkable legacy. Between 1968 and 1986, he scored more than 12,000 runs in 219 first-class matches for Lancashire and captained the side for five seasons. He played a central role in the club’s dominance in limited-overs cricket, helping secure consecutive One-Day League titles in 1969 and 1970 and four Gillette Cup victories between 1970 and 1975. His commanding 126 in the 1972 Gillette Cup final at Lord’s remains one of the county’s most celebrated innings.

Lloyd’s association with Lancashire extended well beyond his playing career. He later served as vice president and spent nearly two decades on the club’s management committee. In 2020, he was inducted into the inaugural Lancashire Cricket Hall of Fame, and his contribution is permanently recognised at Old Trafford through the Clive Lloyd and Farokh Engineer Stand.

Internationally, Lloyd’s leadership transformed West Indies cricket. Representing the regional side from 1966 to 1985, he played 110 Test matches and captained the team in 74, recording 36 victories — then a record for a West Indies captain. Under his stewardship, the team achieved a 26-match unbeaten run, including 11 consecutive victories, during what is widely regarded as the golden era of West Indies cricket. He scored 19 Test centuries, including an unbeaten 242 against India in 1975.

That same year, Lloyd led the West Indies to victory in the inaugural ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at Lord’s, lifting the Prudential Trophy after defeating Australia. The triumph established the Caribbean side as a global force in the emerging one-day format.

Regionally, Lloyd also guided Guyana to a historic double in 1983, becoming the first territory to win both the four-day and one-day regional titles in the same season.

His achievements have earned numerous honours, including Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1971, induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009, the Order of the Caribbean Community, and a knighthood in 2022. He continues to serve Guyanese cricket as an executive member and specialist consultant to the GCB.

In saluting Lloyd’s nomination, the GCB said his presidency will bring experience, stature, and a lifelong commitment to excellence back to Lancashire’s leadership. For Sir Clive Lloyd, the role marks a full-circle moment — returning to the county where much of his legend was forged, now as its ceremonial head.
