Minister of Health, please tell us the real reason Guyana has not renewed the bilateral medical cooperation agreement with Cuba

Dear Editor

I held my breath as I once again recall a popular newspaper article, “Believe it or not by Ripley”, as I heard the most Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, explaining why Guyana has not renewed the bilateral medical cooperation agreement with Cuba. His words were spurious and unbecoming of a representative of an independent country. Cuba has provided “top-class” training of medical physicians and allied skills. The absurdity is, when Dr Anthony made this announcement this week, we had about fifty young Guyanese being trained in the Republic of Cuba.

Of interest, there is a photograph of the Minister and the Cuban Ambassador, taken in 2023 hailing the signing of this contract. Recall recently Guyanese were bombarded by top PPP operators about the sanctity of contracts, thereby taking a moral high-ground, are we witnessing a classic example of the only thing being consistent, is the inconsistency of this administration? Dr Jagan, Mrs Janet Jagan, Boysie Ramcharan and all the freedom fighters, must be weeping and asking the question; is this the PPP we established?

Cuba has treated Guyanese, including very senior PPP, PNC and other Guyanese over the years, with first-class medical and dental services. The provision of these services never stopped; I am aware of senior PPP operatives who were in receipt of this magnanimity from the people of Cuba. What therefore is behind this sudden severance, for me, it is not only silly, it is more of a betrayal, being pusillanimous is one thing, but betrayal is unacceptable. And we ask the minister to tell us the whole story.

Sincerely

Elder Hamilton Green
