Former City of Georgetown Mayor and retired Staff Sergeant of the Guyana Defence Force, Pt. Ubraj Narine, has issued a New Year message urging Guyanese to demand accountability and good governance as the country enters 2026.
Addressing “my dear Guyanese brothers and sisters,” Narine extended greetings to households across the nation and emphasized that the New Year presents “renewed hope, fresh resolve, and an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the principles that make Guyana strong—justice, equality, accountability, and unity.”
Narine also spoke candidly about the challenges facing the country. “Too many of our people continue to struggle under mismanagement, corruption, and broken promises. A government that serves only a few while the many suffer has failed its moral duty,” he said, referring to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government. He added that the administration must be “held accountable for its actions, its lack of transparency, and its disregard for the everyday hardships faced by ordinary Guyanese.”
The former mayor called on citizens to engage in peaceful political activism, stressing that “democracy does not end at the ballot box; it lives through vigilance, courage, and the collective voice of the people.” He urged Guyanese to insist on integrity in public office, fair distribution of national wealth, respect for the rule of law, and inclusion of all citizens.
“Let us move forward united, not divided; determined, not discouraged. The future of Guyana belongs to its people, not to any single political party,” Narine said, adding that lawful and peaceful action can build a nation where opportunity is shared, corruption is rejected, and leadership truly serves the people.
He concluded his message by wishing Guyanese strength, clarity, and justice in the coming year. “Happy New Year, Guyana. May God bless you and our beautiful country,” he said.
