The General Council of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) at its meeting held on December 18, 2025, unanimously congratulated the President, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on a well-articulated, profound and all-encompassing address to the nation on December 17, 2025. Through the address, Guyanese, the Council expressed the belief that President Ali’s government vision is clear, not only for the next five (5) years but for the long-term development and sustainability of the nation.
The Council recognised that in the more than two (2) hour address, the President offered our people what we should expect in the coming five (5) years and the broader policy vision that guides the administration’s plan. Of course, our people, particularly the working people, will be heartened to know that they remain central to the government’s thrust. The vision of reducing poverty and increasing wealth sustainably and pragmatically is a long-held dream of the working class.
The Council applauded the Government’s decision to announce yet another direct transfer of our nation’s wealth to our people. We are aware that the announcement of the cash grant has dominated the national debate for weeks now. Of course, the Council could not ignore those who attempted, futilely, to score cheap political points. Even more significant is the clear commitment to similar payouts in future years.
However, apart from the direct cash grant, the General Council acknowledged that the President implemented several worker-friendly policies. The commitment to increase the education grant, improve pensions, promote the development of childcare facilities, and continue the evolution in the health and education sectors are in themselves laudable advances. However, when viewed collectively, a clear picture emerged of a government committed to improving the lives of its people.
The Council was particularly pleased to learn of the government’s undertaking to improve the financial literacy and well-being of our ordinary people. Moreover, there is a promise to reduce the cost of living through realistic plans. The Council noted that the physical, cultural and social transformation of our country received particular attention. In addition to efforts to diversify and build a resilient economy. Indeed, as the address articulated, we can both be strong and fair. An aspiration we also subscribe to.
The Union’s General Council, its highest forum outside of Congresses, was pleased with the initiatives and plans announced and elaborated by the President. His pointed, frank and full address reinforces that we are in good hands and our future is assured. Indeed, the aspirations held by our ancestors are coming to realisation, and the future is certainly bright.
